How to use this calculator

Enter annual driving distance, current measured efficiency, the efficiency you want to compare and your fuel price. Compare like driving conditions and use the same measurement system for both efficiencies. The calculator keeps annual distance and price constant to isolate the fuel-use difference. Monthly savings are the annual estimate divided by twelve, not a prediction for each calendar month.

Prices and mileage are examples, not live data. This compares fuel spending only; it excludes purchase price, depreciation, financing, insurance, maintenance and modification costs. It does not establish that a replacement vehicle or an efficiency modification pays for itself. Use the ownership-cost comparison for a broader budget.

The formula

Annual fuel = annual miles ÷ mpg, or annual km × L/100 km ÷ 100. Annual cost = fuel × price per matching gallon or liter. Savings = current cost − comparison cost. Fuel-use reduction (%) = (1 − comparison fuel per distance ÷ current fuel per distance) × 100.

A worked example

At 12,000 miles per year and $3.50 per U.S. gallon, 20 mpg uses 600 gallons and costs $2,100. At 30 mpg, fuel use is 400 gallons and cost is $1,400. Savings are $700 per year, about $58.33 per month, and 200 gallons. Fuel use falls by 33.33%, even though MPG rises by 50%.

Common questions

Why does a 50% MPG increase save only one-third of fuel?

Fuel used over a fixed distance is the reciprocal of MPG. Going from 20 to 30 mpg changes fuel use from 1/20 to 1/30 gallon per mile, a one-third reduction. Percentage MPG improvement and percentage fuel reduction are different quantities.

Can the savings be negative?

Yes. A lower comparison MPG, or higher comparison L/100 km, consumes more fuel for the same distance. Negative values mean additional spending and additional fuel use.

Can I compare regular gasoline with premium or diesel?

This version holds fuel price constant and is intended to isolate efficiency for the same fuel price. Different fuel prices need separate cost calculations or the ownership comparison.

What if I drive zero miles or pay nothing for fuel?

Zero distance produces zero fuel and cost totals. A zero fuel price produces zero dollar savings, although fuel-volume savings can still exist. The percentage describes the efficiency relationship, independent of distance.

Can I use this to prove a fuel-saving product works?

No. Entering a claimed efficiency only models its consequences. This tool does not verify that a product achieves the claim; use reliable measurements and evidence before treating an improvement as real.
