How to use this calculator

Choose whether to solve for wheel RPM or road speed. Select mph or km/h. Enter the known speed, then choose the format of your tire’s rolling specification and enter its value. Manufacturer revolutions-per-distance data avoids replacing the tire with a nominal unloaded circle. When using measured rollout, circumference means travel per wheel revolution, not wheel diameter or rim size.

Assumes rolling without significant slip and a representative rolling specification. Tire operating conditions can change the relationship. This is not an ABS diagnostic, speedometer calibration procedure, safe-speed rating or tire-fitment approval. It calculates wheel rotation, not engine RPM; engine speed additionally depends on drivetrain ratios and slip.

The formula

Wheel rev/min = road speed (mph) × tire rev/mile ÷ 60, or road speed (km/h) × tire rev/km ÷ 60. Reverse these equations for road speed. Rolling circumference (in) = 63,360 ÷ rev/mile; circumference (mm) = 1,000,000 ÷ rev/km. With circumference in meters, wheel rev/min = road speed (m/min) ÷ circumference.

A worked example

At 60 mph with an entered 800 rev/mile specification, wheel speed is 60 × 800 ÷ 60 = 800 rev/min, or 13.33 rev/s. The corresponding rolling circumference is 79.2 inches (2,011.68 mm). In reverse mode, 1,000 rev/min with that same specification gives 75 mph. A separate metric example, 90 km/h and 500 rev/km, gives 750 rev/min.

Common questions

Is rev/mile the same as RPM?

No. Rev/mile counts turns over a distance. Here RPM means revolutions per minute, a rate over time. Multiplying rev/mile by miles per minute connects them. Always check the units in tire data.

Why use rolling circumference instead of nominal tire diameter?

A tire’s rolling specification describes distance traveled per revolution. Nominal size geometry treats it as an unloaded circle. The two values can differ, so a tire-size-code result is an approximation rather than a replacement for model-specific rolling data.

What if I only have a size such as 225/45R17?

Use the linked Tire Size Calculator for a geometric rev/mile estimate, then enter that result here. Retain its unloaded-geometry limitation; the conversion does not turn an estimate into a measured specification.

Will it work with a locked or spinning tire?

The road-speed conversion assumes rolling without significant slip. A locked tire can have zero wheel RPM while the vehicle slides, and wheelspin can raise RPM without the predicted road speed.

Do I multiply by all four wheels?

No. The result is the rotational rate of one wheel using the entered rolling specification. Adding the revolutions of multiple wheels does not describe vehicle speed.
